My Indian friend visited me this week. Poor girl got lost, and ended up in SF! Luckily, she called me, and I was able to guide her back to the right side of the bay. First things first, we grabbed lunch in Berkeley. Then, we visited the Indian section of the town, University and San Pablo streets. That's where I proved my point of how the saris in the stores are ugly.
To prepare for our home cooking session, we bought wheat flour. Then, we headed back to my place, where she made me chai, chapati (wheat breat) and daal curry from scratch. Frankly, I was embarrassed. Why was I not taught to cook when I was growing up and leaving home? Apparently, all the Indian girls were taught how to cook.
I was very impressed to see her making the chapati from scratch. Its like magic, I tell you. Anyhoo, we were very lucky, as she made us dinner for the night. Which sparked us to brush up our cooking. We are not there yet, but this is just the beginning.
I was thankful that she was so down to earth. Even did dishes without my asking. Its nice to be pleasantly surprised, and to do things out of the ordinary. Although we didn't get to go away this weekend as we originally planned, at the end of the day, its nice to be with loved ones, near and far.
Happy Diwali!
